The Mighty Alhambra

December 17 – Alhambra and off to Barcelona

Court of Comares - Alhambra by Justin KornToday we had reservations to visit Alhambra. We woke up around 8:30am and headed out the door around 9:15, caught a taxi and was on our way.

We spent a good 4+ hours visiting the different structures and parts of Alhambra. We had a reserved time to see Placio Nazaries at 11:00am, so we only had about an hour to spare when we first got there. First, we checked out Alcazaba which was one of the main military post within Alhambra. There were a few great views from the towers of Alcazaba, but it seemed like a majority of Alcazaba was under construction and we were only able to see a small part. Matter of fact, this seemed to be the case throughout the entire place. I guess since there are a lot less tourist during the winter, they do most of the maintenance and construction during this time. After Alcazaba, we still had about 30 minutes to spare, so we checked out Palacio Carlos V. Within, there was an art gallery containing paintings and sculptures of mostly religious figures. Unfortunately, there was no photography allowed in this gallery. With 5 minutes left to spare, we headed across the way to Palacio Nazaries. At the beginning, when we entered Alhambra, we decided to get the audio tour and most of the points with explanations were within Palacio Nazaries. Unfortunately, I was too busy trying to take pictures and avoiding the massive groups that were allowed in right behind us, so I didn’t get a chance to listen to most of the audio within. After the Palacio, we headed over to Generalife and by the time we were done, my stomach was telling it me was time to eat.

Alhambra Landscape by Justin KornWe headed back into town via bus and found a place called La Castellana. We sat down and ordered a few drinks and a nice large meal (this has not happened often). We took our time and then strolled back to the hotel and sat in the lobby for a little bit before heading to the airport for our flight to Barcelona. At about 5:30pm we jumped back in the car and headed for the airport for our 9:00pm flight.

Our flight and trip into the city was uneventful. We arrived at our hotel around 11:30pm and immediately went right back out to find a place to eat. We ended up going to an Italian place around the corner from the hotel. After, what I guess you would call dinner, we were exhausted and headed to bed.

Till next time…
